Hi I'm Duncan, a UK based Academic interested in exploring the Scholarship of Teaching and Learning (SoTL).  On this page you'll find some snippets about me, both personally and professionally. I am currently an Associate Teaching Professor in the School of Education and Psychology, and the Academic Lead for Education at the University of Bolton.  My research interests include SoTL, Students as Partners, Managing Expectations, Professional Recognition.

I have been recognised as a:

  • Fellow of the Society for Education and Training with QTLS

  • Fellow of the Chartered Institute of Educational Assessors

  • Principal Fellow of the Higher Education Academy (Advance HE)

  • National Teaching Fellow (2019)

I've been working in education since 2000 in a variety of guises. Over the years I have taught English, Culture, Clinical Communication Skills,  Clinical Governance, Transnational Education, Educational Theory as well as training teachers and lecturers.

I lived and worked in China for 18 months managing a teacher education programme and 4 satellite centres before returning to the UK in 2004. 

I have managed private colleges/collaborative partners, worked in medical education in the NHS (National Health Service) and taught at Universities in the UK and overseas. During my time working in the NHS I also managed Nephrology/Renal in-patient and out-patient service alongside dialysis units during a secondment. I have worked in worked in quality roles and have successfully supported organisations through quality assurance processes.


So a little about me then.... 

I'm from the North West of England and have lived across the UK, in Florida and Guangzhou.

I'm a musician (Flute, Clarinet and Sax) and have played in orchestras, windbands and jazz/stage bands over the years. I also play in pit orchestras for amateur dramatic societies.

I love reading and am a big fan of David and Leigh Eddings.

I'm partial to prosecco, and gin but not necessarily together.

I also love to travel, so there'll be a few photos on the site.
